How to Fuel Your Spiritual Health For The Not So Spiritual

Posted on July 24th, 2020

Lately, we’ve been talking about different types of self-care, and one dimension that you should not overlook is your own spiritual self-care.

The crazy part is, this is one area of life that is most often overlooked, and that is simply because we don’t’ put the time or work in. Even if you think you practice spiritual self-care, chances are, you are still falling short.

Getting started doesn’t have to be complicated – you just have to be able to be willing to put in the time and allow yourself to get to know… well, you.

So, What Is Spiritual Self-Care?

Now, most people may associate spirituality with religion, but the concept is much broader. You don’t have to be religious to experience spirituality or work towards improving your spiritual health.

Spirituality focuses on the wellbeing of the mind, and the need to stay connected, grounded, and at peace with yourself. This is different than your psychological or emotional health.

Spiritual self-care is what you do to know who you are as an individual - or what some would call, finding yourself. However, it goes a bit deeper. Who you are is made up of your desires, morals, belief system, and what truly matters to you at your core. We all think we already know these things, but as you practice self-care, you may find that some of the views you had of yourself are not completely right. You will also discover new things about yourself that you never knew – no matter what age you are.

Once you “find yourself,” you need to be sure you stay connected with yourself, as we are always changing and evolving as people.

When you practice spiritual self-care, you are nourishing your body and soul. You are committing to yourself and learning to be at peace.

This means that you are learning to be comfortable with yourself. You learn to understand yourself and trust yourself through self-reflection and contemplation.

Because spiritual self-care often means stepping back from life, this is one aspect of overlooked and rarely practiced self-care. In today’s busy world, we are constantly on the go. We overwork outsells and spend our downtime creeping through social media, or watching Netflix. We are always plugged in and never give ourselves a break.

Taking care of your spiritual health when you are constantly “plugged-in” is almost impossible. Here are some things you need to do to step back and start taking care of your spiritual health…

How to Practice Self-Care in Today’s Busy World

MEDITATE

You are probably familiar with the stereotypical idea of mediation… sitting in the middle of the room, legs crossed, hands rested on your knees while you are deep in thought with your eyes closed.

Meditation doesn’t have to be more complicated than this. This practice has numerous benefits and can connect you to your inner self by calming your mind, disconnecting you from your thoughts, and digging into yourself.

If you are new to mediation and don’t have any experience outside of what you’ve seen on TV, start with the basics.

  • Find a quiet space where you can sit or lie in silence
  • Close your eyes and focus on your breathing - don’t try to control your breathing… just breathe naturally
  • Pay attention to how your body moves with every breath you inhale and exhale
  • If your mind begins to wander, focus it back on your breath
  • Start with short 5-minute sessions and then increase the time as you get more comfortable with meditating

One way meditation helps is by allowing wandering thoughts to pass without allowing us to engage in them or judge them. This can help you gain more awareness and give you insight into your own mind.

Most people assume that point of meditation is to keep a clear mind, but in fact, it’s the opposite. It is teaching you to become more focused and gain control over your thoughts.

Practice Gratitude

If you are not taking the time to reflect on the things in your life you should be thankful for, you are not practicing spiritual self-care. No matter what is going on in your life, you need to find things you can be grateful for and appreciate what you have, not focus on what you are lacking.

By practicing gratitude, you learn to focus o the positive things. This, in turn, leads to more positive things happening in your life. You also learn to stay in the present and focus on what is happening now. This means less time dwelling in the past and more time knowing yourself as you are now.

A good way to start practicing gratitude is by starting your day off writing down everything you are grateful for. This exercise should only take you a few moments but will make a BIG impact on your life.

Experience Nature

It’s amazing the impact being outside can have on you. While you may not be able to do this every day, take time out of your busy schedule to experience nature. Take a walk or do something exciting, as long as you are outside in a natural environment.

By emerging yourself in nature, you disconnect from your day-to-day and focus on what is going on with you. Experiencing nature allows you to experience yourself.

Nature is bigger than we are, and when you are in the middle of it, it has the power to be truly humbling. Just a few hours can do wonders for your wellbeing.

Take Care of Yourself

When we talk about taking care of yourself, we are talking about your physical health

This means making sure you exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet that is void of processed foods and excess sugar.

Practice Self-Compassion - #BeKindtoYourself

If you want to improve your spiritual health, you need to improve your relationship with yourself. You can do this by practicing self-compassion or the act of self-love, acceptance, and understanding.

Most of us feel compassion towards others and do our best to accept and understand them; however, we don’t extend the same courtesy to ourselves.

Self-compassion is crucial for our own self-awareness and self-esteem. It is ingrained in how we see and judge ourselves.

We focus on what we could have done better or what we have yet to accomplish or “get right.”

Instead, give yourself a break. Treat yourself like you would your best friend. You may not always live up to expectations – others or your own – but if you are trying your best, that is all you can expect. Be kind to yourself in the event of failure, and instead of passing judgment, use it as a motivator. Learn something about yourself and what you need to do to be more successful the next time around.

Failing is not a bad thing; it is a way to gain better insight, become more connected with yourself, and an opportunity for growth.

Optimize Your Spiritual Health

Taking care of your spiritual health takes practice, and some of these exercises may not seem to take hold right away. The key is to stay consistent and strive for better results. Taking the time to create more awareness around your relationship with your inner-self and who you are as an individual is a step in the right direction, whether or not the actual exercises are successful.

The idea that you are investing in your spiritual health will have more positive results than if you were to continue to ignore this vital aspect of self-care.

Be sure that you are taking the time to listen to your thoughts. Continue to learn more about yourself. As you get older, we feel like we know ourselves, and there is nothing new, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. No matter how old you get, it is never too late to discover new things about who you are and what is important to you. Remember, you are always evolving and changing, so the person you knew yesterday may not be the person you are today. Don’t lose sight of yourself.
